WESTLAKE ACADEMY
MEMORANDUM
TO: President Wheat and Board of Trustees
FROM: Clint Calzini, Ph.D., Secondary Principal
SUBJECT: Requesting a waiver to Trustee Policy 09-08
DATE: September 12, 2011
As noted by School Board Policy (No. 09-08, p. 65) and the most recent
Westlake Academy Board Westlake Academy Board of Trustees Parent Survey,
Residential Trips are considered an important aspect of Westlake Academy's
tradition and educational program. Recent school history, however, has shown
there to be difficulty in meeting the two-thirds requirement of class
participation. This observation has been noted anecdotally via conversations
with the administration.
The current policy stipulates that the 11th Grade trip must be a local destination
(p. 66), yet a trip presented to the Secondary Principal has provided a student
travel opportunity that meets vital criteria for success: educational value and
relevance, reasonable cost and prospect for group bonding. Moreover,
preliminary student interest that demonstrates that just over 75% of the 11th
grade is in favor of this trip. Although a local trip may also meet these criteria,
none have been presented at this time.
Based on these facts, the Secondary Principal seeks a waiver to the current
policy.
