PRESENT: President Stephen Thornton, Becky Fisher,Tom Miller, Kim Morris,Trish Rapp and Daniel
Zipperlen
ABSENT: Paula Thornton and Jon White
1. CALL TO ORDER.
President Thornton called the meeting to order at 6:35 P.M.
2. REVIEW AND APPROVE MINUTES OF THE WHPS MEETING HELD ON MARCH 6,2018.
Member Rapp read the minutes.
MOTION: Member Morris made a motion to approve the minutes. Member Rapp seconded
the motion. The motion carried.
3. TREASURER'S REPORT.
Member Morris distributed a Statement of Activities as prepared by the town. Melinda Brown
added a summary page itemizing the prior month's transactions. The category Special Events
Revenue and Expenditures will be broken down by each WHPS event to include projected
revenues and expenditures amounts.
4. MEMBERSHIP REPORT.
Member Rapp organized and updated the WHPS membership list to reflect current members
and the types of memberships they hold. It should make the collection of dues more efficient.
Member Morris will continue to keep the list current and provide the projected revenue from
dues for the budget.
Member Morris distributed an updated membership letter and suggested we send out four
different letters this year:a renewal letter, a thank you letter to Pathfinder members, possibly
send a letter to the new residents of Westlake and to Westlake Academy parents.
There was discussion about members being able to join and pay membership dues online.
S. OLD BUSINESS.
None
6. NEW BUSINESS AND COMMITTEE REPORTS.
Decoration Day:
Troy Meyer has secured a singer. We have a trumpet player at a cost of$50 to play Tops. Boy
Scout Troop 170 has agreed to make cobblers. The boy scouts will also do the presentation of
the colors and the retirement of the flag. Bill Covington will be our speaker. President Thornton
would like to have a retired military general speak.
Motion: Member Rapp made a motion to spend up to$50 for a plague for the
Boy Scout Troop showing our appreciation. Member Miller seconded
the motion. The motion carried.
President Thornton suggested we begin distributing the jars for the Poppy Program which
benefits veterans. Member Fisher provided a list of locations where she and Member White
displayed jars with the amount of money collected at each business. Members Morris and Rapp
also agreed to distribute Poppy Jars.
Historical Marker and Dedication:
President Thornton distributed a sheet on Henry Keller who was a Civil War Confederate soldier
credited with building the Stone House.
Motion: Member Fisher made a motion to postpone the historical marker
dedication until a future date to be determined once more information
has been gathered. Member Miller seconded the motion. The motion
carried.
Member Miller again suggested that a university archeology department might be interested in
taking on the project to do the research and a possible dig.
WHPS Website &Social Media:
No report.
Simply Westlake:
Member Rapp made a suggestion to begin our own quarterly newsletter to inform members of
upcoming WHPS events. We will put this topic on the agenda for our next meeting.
Future Ideas and Purchases:
President Thornton has researched possible vendors for WHPS to purchase our own flag poles
and flags. The suggestion was made to see if the town had vendors for such items. President
Thornton feels a sponsor may be necessary to cover the cost of quality products.
WHPS Website&Social Media:
Member Zipperlen suggested two$20 Facebook boosts for Decoration Day,
Motion: Member Zipperlen made a motion to allocate$40 for two$20 Facebook boosts
for Decoration Day. Member Fisher seconded the motion. The motion carried.
Simply Westlake:
Members Thornton and Rapp will submit an article.
Future Ideas and Purchases:
Motion: Member Zipperlen made a motion to allocate up to$750 for expenses related to
Decoration Day. Member Miller seconded the motion. The motion carried.
6. ADJOURNMENT:
President Thornton asked for a motion to adjourn the meeting.
MOTION: Member Miller made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Member Zipperlen
seconded the motion. The motion carried.
President Thornton adjourned the meeting at 9:08 P.M.
The next scheduled meeting of the Westlake Historical Preservation Society Board will be
Tuesday, April 10, 2018, at 6:30 PM at the Council Chambers, 1500 Solana Blvd., Building 7,
Suite 7100, Westlake,Texas 76262.
