Moving Forward2012-2013 Year in Review The 42 students in the Class of 2013 were awarded more than $3.2 million in scholarships and grants. In U.S. News & World Report, the Academy earned ranking of #41 in the United States and #6 in Texas. Among charter schools, we achieved ranking of #11 in the United States and #1 in Texas. WA was recognized as the 20th “Most Challenging High School” in the United States by The Washington Post. Westlake Academy Foundation awarded grants of $144,208 to support students and staff. Record-setting Blacksmith Annual Fund raised $740,612 for Academy operations. 83% of students passed the intensive IB Exams, exceeding the world average of 78.5%. Your caring generosity made all this and mre possible. Thank You! Dear Friends of the Foundation: This 10th Anniversary year at Westlake Academy shined especially bright and we have you to thank! As we look back and plan ahead, you have been the constant. Your gifts have ensured that I.B. thinking, learning, and discovering happens in our classrooms every day. Thank you for believing in the Academy with all your heart, and giving heartily to support the important work of our students and teachers. For a decade, you have made the difference. Bottom row (left to right) Rebecca Neidich, Karen Stoltenberg, Charlotte Ryan, Zan Jones, Kelly Cox, Dr. Shelly Myers (Executive Director). Not pictured: Bill Greenwood, Kevin Hansen, Andy Sedino. As Westlake Academy has grown, so has your generous support. The 2012-2013 Blacksmith Annual Fund raised a record $740,142 from 80% of our families. State funding is continually being cut, but your generous contributions have allowed our school to maintain the high level of educational excellence it is known for in our community. Blacksmith Annual Fund donations, along with grant awards totaling $142,000, enabled the Foundation to present Superintendent Tom Brymer with a check for $882,142 toward 2012-2013 school operations. Our school would look very different without these important gifts. We appreciate you! Blacksmith Annual Fund Now 2012-2013 Board Westlake Academy opened its doors in September 2003 when Town of Westlake officials took advantage of Texas’ acceptance of charter schools thus becoming the first and only municipality to receive a charter designation. The school began with PYP students in Grades 1 through 6. Additional grades were added each year until our first full K-12 school year ended with our inaugural graduates, the class of 2010. As a charter school, Westlake Academy receives approximately 70% of the state dollars, per student, of the average public school. Initially called the “Blacksmith Apprentice Program,” the Blacksmith Annual Fund launched during the 2004-2005 school year to bridge this financial gap. “Let us join together to support the Blacksmith Apprentice Program… State funding alone will not support achieving our goals. We are committed to small classes and differentiated instruction; we are committed to structured inquiry that ignites students’ thirst for knowledge.” Thank you! 2012-2013 Barbara Brizuela, Westlake Academy Principal (October, 2005) Blacksmith Annual Fund Then 2004-2005 This Year-in-Review reflects contributions made Sept. 1, 2012 - August 31, 2013. Much care and attention have been given to this report’s preparation; however, should you note an error, please accept our sincere apology and advise the Foundation Office (817-490-5722). The evening’s highlight was the wonderful collection of students’ original artwork created to generate funds and community awareness for the school. A small but mighty volunteer corps secured donations from art galleries and local businesses for guests to bid on while enjoying cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Now held each spring, the 10th Annual Gallery Night continues its art-themed heritage. This year’s attendees enjoyed live entertainment and spectacular auctions wrapped in an Alice in Wonderland theme. Our collaboration with Westlake Public Art Society pairs professional artists with PYP classes to provide experiential learning in different art mediums plus professionally inspired student art. We raised over $109,000 for Westlake Academy, with $10,000 of this raised through the silent auction sale of student art. Thank you for making this perennial favorite a wonderful community builder for Westlake Academy! The inaugural Westlake Baja Golf Tournament, including a live and silent auction, teed off in 2009 at Vaquero Club. Over 100 golfers braved the unseasonably cold temperatures to raise more than $252,000 for Westlake Academy teachers. With the vision of elevating our school into national rankings as a Top 100 school in the United States, this fundraiser established the Fund100 for the Foundation that provided grants to recruit, retain and develop Westlake teachers. Now in its fourth year, this “fun”draiser has expanded into the wildly fun Westlake Baja Golf and Tennis event. Through sponsorships, the live auction and a helicopter ball drop (new this year), you helped us raise $137,639! Now that Westlake Academy is listed among the Top 100 schools in the United States, the vision of this event has transformed into helping the Academy maintain the national rankings you have helped us achieve. The Fund100 has been expanded to include grants supporting the school in all facets of educational excellence. Baja Then 2009 Baja Now 2012 “We all remember that one special teacher who made such a difference in our lives. With the help of this new tournament and Fund100, it is our hope that Westlake Academy students will have many‘legacy teachers’ in their lives.” Tim Brittan, Westlake Town Council Member & Inaugural Baja Committee Member Gallery Night Now 2013 Event Donors & Supporters 287 & Ensign Storage Allan Gibbs – Metroport Rotary Amanda Bunch Andrea Ragnow Ange Bumgarner Anna Oakley Anne Marie Hutchison Annette Snook Arlene Taylor Art That Grows Ashlin’s, Ltd.
