MINUTES OF THE
WESTLAKE HISTORICAL PRESERVATION SOCIETY
APRIL 12,2016

PRESENT: President Stephen Thornton,Wanda Brewster,Tom Miller,Jon White, Daniel Zipperlen
ABSENT: Becky Fisher, Laurel Mason, Rob Meyer, Paula Thornton
OTHERS PRESENT: Susan McFarland
1. CALL TO ORDER.
President Thornton called the meeting to order at 7:15 P.M.
2. REVIEW AND APPROVE MINUTES OF THE WHPS MEETING HELD ON MARCH 8, 2016.
Daniel Zipperlen. President Thornton asked for a motion to approve.
MOTION: Member Zipperlen made a motion to approve the minutes with corrections. Member
Miller seconded the motion. The motion carried.
3. TREASURER'S REPORT.
Member Brewster reported income of$400 from dues and $80 from sale of books since our last
meeting on March 8, 2016. There were no expenses because the 2015 car show expenses due
Bert Schultz have not been processed yet. The Town account for Historical Board Expense on
behalf of WHPS saw expenses of$2,219 for the new historical marker for Star Stagecoach Route.
4. OLD BUSINESS
Members Reception.
President Thornton briefly reviewed the Members Reception but discussion was postponed
because Members Thornton and Fisher were absent.

Historical Marker Dedication Day.
The dedication of the Star Stagecoach Route historical marker was held on Saturday, April 2,
2016. President Thornton reported that approximately 70 people attended the event where
Mayor Wheat read the dedication proclamation and the group Buttermilk Junction entertained
with period music and instruments. Refreshments included sandwiches and a wine bar. The
weather was beautiful and it was a very successful event.
5. NEW BUSINESS AND COMMITTEE REPORTS.
Historical Marker.
President Thornton reported that the next historical marker to be dedicated is Mahotea Boone
Trail.
Membership-Wanda Brewster, Membership Chair.
Member Brewster reported that we have 6 new or renewing members from the Members
Reception. Thank you notes were sent to these members and to Mayor Wheat to thank them
for attending the reception. Member Brewster also reported that our list of current and past
members has only 65 names on it. She will work on developing a membership campaign to
attract some more members. Member Miller and Susan McFarland agreed to work on a flyer or
tri-fold that describes WHPS and our activities which we can present to new and prospective
members.
WHPS Website and Social Media—Daniel Zipperlen,Social Media Chair
Member Zipperlen reported that he will focus on using Facebook to promote WHPS. He will
design posts and send them to Susan McFarland for posting on the Town Facebook page.
Simply Westlake.
Susan McFarland reported that she has written an article about the historical marker dedication
day for the June issue. There will also be an article about Decoration Day in an upcoming issue.
I.O.O.F Cemetery.
Members White and Miller will be visiting the cemetery on Sunday,April 17, 2016 to document
the vegetation in the cemetery and check for poison ivy.
Decoration Day.
President Thornton reported that plans are coming together for the event. The featured speaker
will be Bill Brooks, a voiceover artist. President Thornton requested several motions for
expenses related to Decoration Day.
MOTION: Member Miller made a motion to authorize$200 to compensate Mr. Brooks.
Member Zipperlen seconded the motion. The motion carried.
MOTION: Member Miller made a motion to authorize$50 for someone to play taps. Member

White seconded the motion. The motion carried.
MOTION: Member Miller made a motion to authorize$150 to pay a guitarist. Member
Zipperlen seconded the motion. The motion carried.
Future Ideas and Purchases.
MOTION: Member Miller made a motion to reimburse Member Zipperlen for the purchase of
an extra 32 GB SD card for our video camera.
President Thornton asked Member Zipperlen to research a new battery and report back to the
board.
6. ADJOURNMENT
President Thornton asked for a motion to adjourn the meeting.
MOTION: Member Wanda Brewster made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Member Daniel
Zipperlen seconded the motion. The motion carried.
President Thornton adjourned the meeting at 8:46 P.M.
The next scheduled meeting of the Westlake Historical Preservation Society Board will be
Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at 7:00 PM.
