MINUTES OF THE
WESTLAKE HISTORICAL PRESERVATION SOCIETY
March 8, 2016
Westlake Academy
PRESENT. President Stephen Thornton, Wanda Brewster, Becky Fisher, Tom Miller,
Paula Thornton and Jon White.
ABSENT: Laurel Mason, Rob Meyer and Daniel Zipperlen
OTHERS PRESENT. Susan McFarland
1. CALL TO ORDER.
President Thornton called the meeting to order at 7:12 P.M.
2. REVIEW AND APPROVE MINUTES OF THE WHPS MEETING HELD ON
FEBRUARY 2, 2016.
Member Thornton read the minutes.
MOTION: Member White made a motion to approve the minutes with corrections as
discussed. Member Miller seconded the motion. The motion carried.
3. TREASURER'S REPORT.
No new expenses were shown on the Town of Westlake's report from Burt Schultz for
The Classic Car Show. An expense was shown on the report for the Historical Marker
for Star Stagecoach Line.
4. NEW BUSINESS AND COMMITTEE REPORTS.
Membership Reception:
Members Thornton and Brewster had the invitations for The Membership Reception
printed and addressed. Susan McFarland assisted with the postage for the mailing.
Member Thornton will check with Fossil Creek about donating wine for the event.
President Thornton, Member Thornton and Member Fisher went to the model home in
Paigebrooke to preview it for the reception. Member Thornton has already started to
buy the food for the party.
MOTION: Member Thornton made a motion to allocate $800 for all of the expenses for
the Members' Reception. Member Fisher seconded the motion. The motion carried.
WHPS Members will have access to the home at 2 Paigebrooke Lane at 4 p.m. to begin
setting up for the reception.
Historical Marker and Dedication Day:
President Thornton is in possession of the Star Stagecoach Line Historical Marker for
Dedication Day on April 2, 2016. The band Buttermilk Junction will be playing music
authentic to the 1850s at the dedication.
MOTION: President Thornton made the motion to allocate $200 for expenses associated
with Dedication Day. Jon White seconded the motion. The motion carried.
Membership Report.
Member Brewster reported our current roster shows 58 members, but there are only
email addresses for 39 members. We will try to update member information at the
Members' Reception. There was discussion about distributing an informational flyer in
order to encourage people to join WHPS. A packet for new residents of Westlake, should
include the flyer about WHPS. There was discussion about ways to increase
membership through making the organization better known.
Susan McFarland will work on updating the existing WHPS trifold flyer for distribution.
IOOF Cemetery.
President Thornton asked Member Miller to document the number and type of trees on
the cemetery property. Concern was raised about the stripping of vegetation from the
cemetery.
Westlake Academy.
Member Thornton has three local artists lined up to work with the children for
Grandparents' Day. Arrangements will need to be made with Westlake Academy for this
event.
Future Ideas and Purchases.
WHPS property that will be needed for upcoming events needs to be stored at President
Thornton's home instead of the storage unit for convenience.
5. ADJOURNMENT.
President Thornton asked for a motion to adjourn the meeting.
MOTION: Member White made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Member Miller
seconded the motion. The motion carried.
President Thornton adjourned the meeting at 8:35 P.M.
The next scheduled meeting of the Westlake Historical Preservation Society will be
April 12, 2016 in the Council Chambers at the Town Hall.
