HomeMy WebLinkAbout05-05-15 WHPS Min 1 J MINUTES OF THE WESTLAKE HISTORICAL PRESERVATION SOCIETY MAY 5,2015 Westlake History Museum 3 Village Circle,Suite 104 PRESENT: President Stephen Thornton,Wanda Brewster, Laurel Mason, Paula Thornton,Jon White ABSENT: Rob Meyer, Daniel Zipperlen 1. CALL TO ORDER. President Thornton called the meeting to order at 7:05 P.M. 2. REVIEW AND APPROVE MINUTES OF THE WHPS MEETING HELD ON MARCH 17,2015. Member Brewster read the minutes. President Thornton asked for a motion to approve. MOTION: Member White made a motion to approve the minutes. Member Mason seconded the motion. The motion carried. 3. TREASURER'S REPORT. Member Brewster presented the April 30, 2015 financial statement. This statement includes expenses for the Member Reception on March 20`h($500 to the Marriott Solana and $26.88 for postage for mailing the invitations) and the 2014 car show ($1209.17 to Bert Schultz.) The current balance is$5,447. President Thornton asked for a motion to accept the report. MOTION: Member Thornton made a motion to accept the Treasurer's report. Member Mason seconded the motion. The motion carried. 4. OLD BUSINESS Dedication Day: Paula Thornton summarized the activities surrounding the dedication of the historical marker at the Circle T Ranch on April 11. She said the day was beautiful and she thanked the Town for their support. At the event Mayor Pro Tem Carol Langdon read the proclamation and Paula and Daniel Zipperlen spoke about the history of the ranch. WHPS Minutes 5/5/2015 Page 1 of 3 DAR Historic Preservation Award: Paula Thornton reported that she,Stephen Thornton, Daniel Zipperlen and Susan McFarland attended a reception at the Trophy Club Country Club on April 9th where WHPS received an Historic Preservation Award from the Grapevine Captain Molly Corbin chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Volunteer Recognition Ceremony: Paula Thornton reported that on Friday, May 1st she and Stephen Thornton attended a volunteer recognition dinner hosted by State Representative Giovanni Capriglione to recognize volunteers in his district including the towns of Colleyville, Grapevine, Haslet, Keller,Southlake and Westlake. 5. NEW BUSINESS AND COMMITTEE REPORTS. Membership Reception: The Annual Member Reception was held Friday, March 20, 2015 at the Marriott Solana. There were approximately 50 people in attendance. WHPS and the Town of Westlake presented Bert Shultz with the Volunteer of the Year award. Membership: Laurel Mason reported that membership renewal letters will be sent later this week to the people in our spreadsheet of previous members. Simply Westlake: President Thornton reported there will be an article about Decoration Day in the May issue and two articles about the Circle T Ranch in the June issue of Simply Westlake. One of the Circle T Ranch stories will be about the marker dedication and the other will be an interview with Cory Priest who lived on the ranch. Museum Exhibits: Stephen Thornton reported that he and Laurel Mason completed the installation of a poster at our exhibit,the "Contours of Texas" collection of maps, at TD Auto Finance on Roanoke Road. He said the Grapevine chapter of the DAR has suggested they would perform a living history presentation at the company later this year. Decoration Day: Stephen Thornton gave the board a list of activities and tasks for Decoration Day on May 25tH Our speaker will be retired Lt. General Rick Lynch. He is the author of"Adapt or Die: Leadership Principles of an American General." The event will be held from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the LO.O.F cemetery on Ottinger Road. The Board discussed the tasks and our assignments. MOTION: Member Mason made a motion to spend up to$25 for a Facebook boost announcing WHPS Minutes 5/5/2015 Page 2 of 3 the event. Member White seconded the motion. The motion carried. MOTION: Member White made a motion to authorize the following expenses for Decoration Day: $150 for food (hot dogs and related supplies),$100 for Opera on Tap, $100 for a pianist, $50 for the bugler of taps,$100 donation to the Boys Scouts who will provide the color guard and cobbler, and $115 for the porta potty. Member Mason seconded the motion. The motion carried. 6. ADJOURNMENT President Thornton asked for a motion to adjourn the meeting. MOTION: Member Mason made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Member White seconded the motion. The motion carried. President Thornton adjourned the meeting at 8:18 P.M. The next scheduled meeting of the Westlake Historical Preservation Society Board will be Tuesday,June 2, 2015 at 7:00 PM.
