HomeMy WebLinkAboutIB MYP Middle Years Response Part AResponse to Part A Areas of Interaction Within the next two years I would like to develop the two areas of Community Service and ATL (ATL will be our focus this year), in such a way that there is vertical planning and development, where, as students mature as learners and people, they deal with harder and maybe more complex ideas. For example, a Community Service programme could be set out as shown below: Option A: Grade 7: School community Grade 8: Texas community Grade 9: American community Grade 10: Global community With this option, the experience goes from one that is very local, to one that is on a global level. In Grade 7, students may be responsible for working with the Student Council for fund raising activities that may benefit the school community. They may be dining hall monitors. Students could also be on car pool duty. Option B: Grade 7: UNICEF Grade 8: WWW Grade 9: Environment Grade 10: Amnesty International With Option B, students will look at their specific area and they could do a number of things, including the raising of money for their respective organization. They could also take the role of informing their community of what their project involves. This would be a wonderful link to Technology, where they could inform through the WWW. At the same time, we have many students who are engaged in various activities, including: - raising money for local charities, - helping with school clubs for younger children - working with their local churches - assisting with projects within the school For each of the AoI there will be a leader. For the 2005-6 school year, they are as follows: Homo Faber: Linda Smith Health & Social Education: Meireda Rubayo Environment: Courtney Billings ATL: David Jenkins Community Service: Respective 7t" & 8t' Grade form tutors. Our long-term goal is to have this area overseen and led by Westlake parents. Each leader will be responsible for the overseeing of their respective area into all subjects. In our first year, we did this with Environment, which proved quite successful. The area leader will be responsible for meeting with staff and discussing how the areas are being taught, and how they can be developed further. Personal Project We have introduced the Personal Projects in Grade 8. Students will be expected to complete the Project using the guidelines set out in the Personal Project guide. They will also be assessed using the criteria. Although they will not have sufficient knowledge and understanding of the AoI by 8`h, or even 9th Grade, what they will get is practice on completing the Project. At the same time, teachers will also become a lot more familiar with the Project. When students complete the project in Grade 10, every teacher in the MYP will be expected to play a role as a supervisor. With 32 students expected to be in Grade 10, no single teacher should be supervising more than 4 projects.
