WESTLAKE ACADEMY
MEMO
TO: Honorable President and members of the Board of Trustees
FROM: Barbara Brizuela, Head of School
DATE: December 7, 2006
SUBJECT: Meeting of December 11, 2006
ITEM
Consider a Resolution authorizing the enrollment of Westlake Academy- into the Great Lakes Scrip
program to generate additional funds for the school.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Staff recommends approval.
BACKGROUND
Scrip programs exist in many non-profit organizations such as hospitals. churches and schools. Scrip is a
`no -selling" fundraiser, which allows non-profit organization members to purchase gift certificates
(scrip) for everyday expenses such as food. clothing, and entertainment ,vhile earning a percentage of
-each dollar purchased back in revenue for the orzanization.
Because scrip is purchased Nyith cash through a national scrip provider. retailers offer substantial
discounts to the scrip company. The organization buys scrip at the discount rate and resells the
certificates to its members at face value. The discounts. ,N-hich range from 2 - t 0 o are retained by the
oreanization.
In purchasing scrip. members are buying what they would buy anyway. Organizations with 150 families
can raise anywhere from $5.000 to $80.000 a year.-J.C. Pennv. Home Depot. Shell. Blockbuster. Circuit
City and supermarkets are just a few of the retailers who support scrip programs.
Westlake Academy has been studying this possibility during the last two years and now has the format
and organization to be able to launch the program. The Academy would join the Great Lakes Scrip
Center, America's largest scrip provider. The current Westlake Academy bank account Ncould be used
for Scrip transactions. The initial start up costs would be for purchased software (approximately
$140.00) and minimal supplies (approximately $50.00). The cost of these items will be initially funded
-with Academy funds which will be reimbursed with Scrip proceeds once the program is running. The
Scrip program will be self-sufficient and all proceeds -will be available for the Academy's use.
The program Evill be managed by a parent volunteer working directly, in conjunction with the Academy.
Westlake Academy
Report on Results of First Stanford Achievement Tests
Testing window: October 2006
Grades tested: G4 — G9
Narrative
During the first 10 days of October, according to each individual class timetable,
Stanford Achievement Tests (SATS) were administered to every student in Grades 4
through Grade 9. Tests were given in: Word Study Skills, Reading Vocabulary, Reading
Comprehension; Mathematics Problem Solving, Mathematics Procedures; Language,
Spelling; Science; Social Science; Listening; and Thinking Skills.
This was the first time that Westlake Academy administered the Stanford tests. Parents
will be sent the reports within the next few days and will be able to analyze their
student's results, as the form provides a wealth of information in a very easy -to -
understand format. As an institution and as teachers, the tests provide us with much
valuable information for planning for the future.
Without going into too much class -by -class detail, the following information will provide
the reader with an overview of how our students are performing in relation to the national
averages. The Stanford tests are the most widely used achievement (not potential or IQ)
measures in the USA. Our results were very good, indeed. As the table below shows, the
class average ranged from 2.8 — 4.8 years above grade level. Science and Math were
consistently very high above grade level for every grade. Individual students as young as
G6 were scoring at Post High School level. Interestingly, students who have been a part
of Westlake Academy's IB program since its beginning, performed consistently higher on
average, an indication that the inquiry methodology of the IB program does indeed
prepare students with the fundamental academic knowledge and skills within the
framework of developing broad-based global knowledge necessary for life-long learning.

When your organization members
purchase scrip, they're purchasing
negotiable gift certificates that are used
just like cash. The scrip is issued by the
national and local retailers where many
of your organization families already
shop. These merchants want to support
non-profit organizations, and in return
ask you to support them by shopping
with scrip at their stores. Your
organization members can use scrip to
purchase everyday expenses like food,
clothing, and other essentials, and with
every purchase, they earn revenue for
your organization.

The Great Lakes Scrip center acts on behalf of churches, schools and other non-profit
organizations to purchase large amounts of scrip from grocery stores, department stores,
and other retailers. Because the scrip is purchased with cash up front, the participating
retailers offer a substantial discount. Your organization buys the scrip from Great Lakes
Scrip Center at a discount, and re -sells the certificates to your organization members for
full face value. The bulk of the discount - from two to fifteen percent or more - is retained
by your organization as revenue.
Scrip is "shopping cart fundraising".
The reason for the effectiveness of scrip is simple: families generate revenue through
purchases they would make anyway. Groceries, clothing, toys, gifts, even gasoline can be
purchased with scrip. An organization of 150 families easily spends between one and two
million dollars per year on food, clothing and other essentials. If these families use scrip fr
these purchases, they can raise as much as $40,000 to $80,000 per year for their
organization --without spending an additional penny.
Families who purchase scrip certificates actively support the retailers who participate in th
program. The reason is simple... they know that buying from a scrip participating retailer
provides a steady source of revenue for their church, school, or non-profit organization.

WESTLAKE ACADEMY
MEMO
TO: Honorable President and members of the Board of Trustees
FROM: Barbara Brizuela, Head of School
DATE: December 7, 2006
SUBJECT: Meeting of December 11, 2006
ITEM
Consider a Resolution authorizing the enrollment of Westlake Academy into the Great Lakes Scrip
program to generate additional funds for the school.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Staff recommends approval.
Scrip programs exist in many non-profit organizations such as hospitals, churches and schools. Scrip is a
`no -selling' fundraiser, which allows non-profit organization members to purchase gift certificates
(scrip) for everyday expenses such as food, clothing, and entertainment while earning a percentage of
each dollar purchased back in revenue for the organization.
Because scrip is purchased with cash through a national scrip provider. retailers offer substantial
discounts to the scrip company. The organization buys scrip at the discount rate and resells the
certificates to its members at face value. The discounts. which range from 2 — 15% are retained by the
organization.
In purchasing scrip, members are buying what they would buy anyway. Organizations with 150 families
can raise anywhere from $5,000 to $80,000 a year. J.C. Penny, Home Depot, Shell, Blockbuster, Circuit
City and supermarkets are just a few of the retailers who support scrip programs.
Westlake Academy has been studying this possibility during the last two years and now has the format
and organization to be able to launch the program. The Academy would join the Great Lakes Scrip
Center, America's largest scrip provider. The current Westlake Academy bank account would be used
for Scrip transactions. The initial start up costs would be for purchased software (approximately
$140.00) and minimal suppliesapproximate150.00). The cost of these items will be initially funded
wtitf —Academy funds which will be reimbursed with Scrip proceeds once the program is running. The
Scrip program will be self-sufficient and all proceeds will be available for the Academy's use.
The program will be managed by a parent volunteer working directly in conjunction with the Academy.
