III ' Camera a Radar Antenna Control Unit Fox ten Red Light Cameras Are Working 4, By Jeff Barker tS GULF BREEZE - VIOEO INCUOEO he Gulf Breeze Police Department says it patrols paradise. The top cop might not k be in a patrol car, but on a stick - laser f cameras. "The whole program has exceeded our expectations. It's going very well," said Police Chief, Peter Paulding. Word is spreading fast, and cars are slowing down to pay attention. If you run this red light, you end up on a computer, then you end up receiving a $100 violation notice in the mail, and the camera doesn't lie. "About 7-10 violations a day," said Paulding. Traffic on Highway 98 is thick. There are about 50,000 cars a day driving through the red light. So a Gulf Breeze focus group came up with the idea to install the high tech system. The laser camera senses a car can't slow down in time during a yellow light and it starts taking pictures. But it takes two pictures for you to receive a notice. One with your vehicle behind the line at a red light, and one with your vehicle past the line. "This vehicle was doing 34 miles per hour when it went through the traffic light," Paulding said pointing at a picture. Most people see the picture of their car and simply pay the fine. "We've had a few people ask for a hearing that they are entitled to request," he said. But in the end, a picture is worth a thousand words. Or at least 100- bucks. We expect this to be an effective tool to improve the safety of traffic flowing through Gulf Breeze." -Lane Gilchrist, Mayor, Gulf Breeze, FL • "I have found this to be a professional organization that is easy to work with. As a company, they have been responsive to every A. request we have made, they have met every deadline and followed through with every agreement. Their personnel have been reliable, friendly and a pleasure to work with. This is a company that is committed to safety, and that commitment shows in 401 /1111 everything they do."-Major Mark Hoffman, Middletown, OH Police Department • "Knowing they'll be "caught on camera'; drivers have become more aware of running a red light and more cautious with their driving. As such, total collisions at SafeLight intersections have declined at the staggering rate of 31%. And most importantly, the number of personal injuries caused by red light runners has declined by an amazing 39%."- The City of Wilmington, NC • "Our police officers attend to hundreds of calls every year, rarely leaving much time for traffic safety enforcement and really no resources for stopping red light runners. The red light program provided by Traffipax for Bel Air is an effective use of cutting-edge technology to allow our officers to address other public safety needs in the community without neglecting enforcement of traffic safety at critical intersections throughout our town." -Leo Matrangola, Chief of Police, Bel Air, MD • "The whole program has exceeded our expectations. It's going very well."- Peter Paulding, Chief of Police, Gulf Breeze, FL • "Over the last 3 years with SafeLight, however, the total number of collisions reduced by 191, saving our community approximately$3.8 million dollars."- The City of Wilmington, NC • "Charlotte needs this technology to become a safer driving city. SafeLight saves lives and reduces accidents."-David E. Parsons, President of AAA Carolinas • "Our police officers answer 60,000 calls a year. When you see how much time is involved in handling just the call load, it does not leave much time for traffic enforcement, and particularly red light enforcement. The cameras are an efficient and fair use of today's technology to free up our officer's time for other matters, while simultaneously making our streets safer."-Bill Becker, City Manager, Middletown, OH • "Fifty percent of the accidents occurring at traffic signals in Charlotte are caused by motorists running red lights. Through SafeLight's camera system and public education campaign, we are changing motorists'dangerous driving habits and creating safe streets and safe neighborhoods."-Jim Humphrey, Director, Charlotte Department of Transportation • `The use of Traffipax'red light cameras in Forest Heights has made our community much safer by reducing the number of serious injuries, fatalities, and property damage that takes needlessly takes place by simply targeting those reckless drivers that fail to comply with our traffic laws and inherently feel the need to run the red light."-Michael Eubanks, Chief of Police, Forest Heights, MD
