HomeMy WebLinkAboutLeadership Symposium Action Plan Proposal 06-01-152015 International Student Leadership Symposium Sustainable Energy Mercersburg, Pennsylvania Program ●Activities o Alphas and Betas o Country activity o Gaia project o ShelterBox o Shopping activity ●Speakers ●Field trips ●Journalling every night Social ●The Leadership Symposium provides students with an opportunity to expand social horizons o Students interact with one another often Different backgrounds provide an international perspective on global issues Diversified cultures combine and students learn what it is like in different parts of the world, from the perspective of a teenager Take-aways Audrey McQuietor- ●Passion for helping make the world a better place for everyone, “when I was at symposium/in Mercersburg” Elias Mitchell- ●The urgent need for a switch to renewable energy, and leadership skills Scarlet Oakley- ●New friendships and increased passion for environment Mitch Thompson- ●Interesting ways to learn about renewable energy and its importance. Also I made connections with people from around the world. Savannah Tucker- ●I forged new relationships with others as well as obtained a higher level of awareness for our environment and how people across the globe live in it. Jack Woods- I established lifelong friendships with many kids across the world, I also learned about many foreign cultures. Projects at Symposium ●Building Solar Chargers o Functional project o Teaches about electronics and renewable energy ●Building Solar Panels o Powers teacher’s lights o Shows the components of a solar panel Project Proposals Operation Blacksmith Blackout ●An assembly at the end of the day ○How does electricity affect education? ○How do we get electricity to people who don’t have it? ○etc. ●No electricity for one class period (Secondary and DP) ○No electronics, no lights, no smartboards for 30% of the classrooms, all phones get collected in a box Assemblies ●OBB Assembly ●A series of small assemblies to talk about energy saving solutions and renewable resources o K-12 ●End of semester assembly to track our success as a school Solar Panels Installed over the 2015-16 school year ●Mitch and another student in our grade have in place a plan to install solar panels on the MPH o Help teach students about alternative energy o First step in putting them on other buildings ●In the future, we would like to have them on many of Westlake Academy’s buildings o Interactive solar panels would be great for students to learn Water Bottles Refill Station ●Water Refill Station o Retrofit Kit $400-$500 http://www.globalindustrial.com/p/janitorial-maintenance/hand-dryers-towel- dispensers/janitorial-hand-dryers/xlerator-hand-dryer-textured-graphite- epoxy-paint-220-240v o Fountain + Station $912-$1300 http://www.globalindustrial.com/g/plumbing/drinking-fountains/water-refilling- stations/halsey-taylor-wall-mounted-water-refilling-stations-92556 o Need maximum 10 PYP, MYP, A&S, old MYP bldg, Gym/Lunch bldg Timeline: Installed over summer, Water Fountain Stations per Bldg MYP- 3 PYP- 2 A&S- 1 Gym- 3 Old MYP- 1 MPH and FH already have them!
