●The Leadership Symposium provides
students with an opportunity to expand
social horizons
o Students interact with one another often
Different backgrounds provide an international
perspective on global issues
Diversified cultures combine and students learn
what it is like in different parts of the world, from
the perspective of a teenager

Audrey McQuietor-
●Passion for helping make the world a better place for everyone, “when I was at
symposium/in Mercersburg”
Elias Mitchell-
●The urgent need for a switch to renewable energy, and leadership skills
Scarlet Oakley-
●New friendships and increased passion for environment
Mitch Thompson-
●Interesting ways to learn about renewable energy and its importance. Also I
made connections with people from around the world.
Savannah Tucker-
●I forged new relationships with others as well as obtained a higher level of
awareness for our environment and how people across the globe live in it.
Jack Woods- I established lifelong friendships with many kids across the world, I also
learned about many foreign cultures.

Project Proposals
Operation Blacksmith Blackout
●An assembly at the end of the day
○How does electricity affect education?
○How do we get electricity to people who don’t have
it?
○etc.
●No electricity for one class period
(Secondary and DP)
○No electronics, no lights, no smartboards for 30% of
the classrooms, all phones get collected in a box
Assemblies
●OBB Assembly
●A series of small assemblies to talk about
energy saving solutions and renewable
resources
o K-12
●End of semester assembly to track our
success as a school
Solar Panels
Installed over the 2015-16 school year
●Mitch and another student in our grade have in place a plan to install solar panels on the MPH
o Help teach students about alternative energy
o First step in putting them on other buildings
●In the future, we would like to have them on many of Westlake Academy’s buildings
o Interactive solar panels would be great for students to learn

Water Bottles
●Klean Kanteen Bottles
o $18.95-$32.95 depending on
style
o Distributed to all MYP and
DP students
o Must fill out a form to order
from them, and they have
the right to decline
partnership (need approval)
o Must design a logo for
bottles

●Design must be in Vector format (not .jpeg)
●Could be in navy or maroon with logo,
Westlake Academy, and school year
Cafeteria Water Bottles
Starting next school year
●Since students will have water bottles, we'd
like to have the cafeteria stop selling plastic
water bottles in support of the reusable ones
●Many other schools from the symposium
have implemented similar changes with their
school lunches and it has been effective
Recycling
●Recycling Week
o One week in the first quarter of the 2015-2016 school
year
o Informational presentation about what can/cannot be
recycled, and where bins will be
o Assembly- Sorting games in gym
Grade vs. grade timed activity to see who can sort
the best
●Work with Green Team to popularize
recycling
