WESTLAKE HISTORICAL PRESERVATION
BOARD MEETING
MARCH 7, 2005
Present: Kelly Bradley, Joyce Roach, Stephen Thornton, Carolyn Sims, Ruby Held,
Allen Heath, Jack Wiesman, and Jean Dwinnell
Absent: Vickey Smith, Tom Allen, and Lisa Stewart
The meeting was called to order at 7:23 p.m., in the administrative conference room at
the Town Hall.
Kelly announced that Joyce's husband had passed away and that the funeral had been
held on Wednesday, March 2.
Jack announced that Jim Bailey had a stroke and suggested the Board send a card.
Kelly presented a card and had each Board member sign.
Jean read the minutes of February 7, 2005, and there was a motion by Allen, seconded
by Jack to accept the minutes as read. Joyce gave the correct spelling for Candelarias
and Texas Station Historical Association was changed to Texas State Historical
Association on page two. The vote on the motion carried unanimously.
Jean reported no new memberships and was presented with membership payments
from Kelly and Joyce (for Connie and Darrell Roach and Delight and Brooks Justice).
Jean distributed the Treasurer's report. There were no questions or discussion.
Kelly discussed the meeting time, quarterly meetings, contacting Howard Garrett for the
April meeting, holding monthly meetings only nine (9) times per year, inviting the
membership and having a speaker in the spring and in the fall at the annual meeting,
sending a newsletter to the Society as well as all Westlake residents, and the Town's
50th Anniversary.
Stephen spoke regarding the exposure of the Tree City Committee and its rejuvenation
and suggested including children in the meetings in order to get more adults.
Discussion was held regarding the possibility of creating a Town of Westlake History
Book to commemorate Westlake's 50th anniversary in 2006. What could and should be
included as well as the process by which the book would be created was considered.
Carolyn explained that the intent of the budget was for the Society to raise some funds,
apply for grants, etc., and suggested finding more sponsors for the Pathfinder.
Joyce discussed options for lowering the cost of the Pathfinder, such as using no color
only black/white publications, and the possibility of selling ads. Jack suggested we bid
the print job to see what options are available.
Jack raised the question and Carolyn confirmed that hotel/motel tax dollars are used to
fund the Historical Society.
Discussion was held regarding the next meeting of the Historical Preservation Board.
Several dates were discussed for holding the meeting and for preparation for the
meeting. Kelly suggested finding out if Howard Garrett could be the speaker and what
dates he is available prior to setting the date for the April meeting.
There being no further business to come before the board there was a motion by Joyce,
seconded by Jack to adjourn. The motion carried unanimously and the meeting was
adjourned at 8:45 p.m.
