WESTLAKE HISTORICAL SOCIETY
BOARD MEETING
FEBRUARY 06, 2006
PRESENT: President Kelly Bradley and Board Members Ruby Held, Stephen
Thornton, Jack Wiesman, Jean Dwinnell, Allen Heath (arrived at 7.30
p.m.), and Pathfinder Editor Joyce Roach
ABSENT: Board Members Dickey Smith, Tom Allen, and Town Liaison Carolyn Sims
OTHERS PRESENT: None
1. CALL TO ORDER
President Bradley called the meeting to order at 6:07 p.m.
2. SECRETARY'S REPORT — Jean Dwinnell
a. Minutes
Ms. Dwinnell moved, Mr. Thornton seconded the motion to approve the minutes of the
Historical Board meeting held January 16, 2006.
There was no discussion and the motion carried unanimously.
b. Membership
Ms. Dwinnell advised the Board that the current membership was 55.
3. TREASURER'S REPORT
There was no report given.
4. PRESIDENT'S REPORT — Kelly Bradley
a. Membership
President Bradley discussed the letter to Mr. Wiesman for his book, thank you letters to
donors over $25, reminder letters to all who have not joined that were members last
year, and letters to all Charter Members to rejoin.
b. Decoration Day
President Bradley reminded the Board that Decoration Day is Memorial Day, May 29th
Discussion ensued regarding the need for a Chair to oversee and manage this event.
Stephen Thornton expressed an interest in chairing the event with the help of Allen
Heath, their spouses, and Teresa Walton.
Mr. Thornton reviewed some of the ideas he had for the event including a treasure hunt
for the kids, a church service reenactment with Trent Petty acting as the preacher,
telling the history of Tapps, and having either Mark Davis or Dave Lieber as emcee.
C. Sponsors for ,50th Year" Book/Celebration
President Bradley advised that she was scheduled to meet with representatives from
First American regarding their sponsorship in the next few days and would keep the
Board informed as to the response.
5. EDITOR'S REPORT — Joyce Gibson Roach
Historical "50th Year" Book
Discussion ensued regarding the History Book and options for acquiring historical
information including notices in local newspapers asking for information and photos;
retrieving information from the Town's minutes from the 1950's; placing a notice in the
Westlake Academy newspaper, The Black Cow; setting up at the Senior Center in
Keller asking families to bring photos and information that could be scanned; and
sending a form with a letter from Mayor Bradley asking the residents to provide
historical information.
Mr. Wiesman asked if anyone had ever seen any information on the orphan trains that
may have come through Westlake at some point in the past. It was the consensus of
the Board to follow up to see if there might be information available.
6. NEIN BUSINESS
a. 50th Year Celebration — Carolyn Sims
There was no report given.
b. Next regular meeting dateltime
It was the consensus of the Board to change the regular meeting dates to the first
Thursday of each month to accommodate more of the membership and to set the first
Thursday meeting for March 2nd
It was the consensus of the Board to have Mr. Thornton purchase a tripod and film for
the Society's camera to be used in future events.
Ms. Roach presented the reframed Charter Membership list and award to Jack
Wiesman.
Mr. Wiesman and Ms. Sanden shared History books from various Cities/Towns in Texas
and North Dakota with the Board members.
7. ADJOURN
Mr. Thornton moved, Ms. Held seconded the motion to adjourn.
There was no discussion and President Bradley declared the meeting adjourned at 7:43
p.m.
