CONSENT AGENDA: All items listed below are considered routine by the Board of Trustees and will be enacted with one motion. There will be no separate discussion of items unless a Board member or citizen so requests, in which event the item will be removed from the general order of business and considered in its normal sequence. a. Consider approval of the minutes from the March 30, 2015, meeting. b. Consider approval of Resolution 15-04, Adopting the 2015-16 and 2016-17 Academic Calendars. c. Consider approval of Resolution 15-05, Approving and Adopting a Credit by Exam (CBE) to be utilized to award Spanish I and II credit to Westlake Academy Spanish Native speaking students. 4. At the meeting, the requesting Board member will explain the item, the need for Board discussion of the item, the item’s relationship to the Board’s strategic priorities, and the amount of estimated staff time necessary to prepare for Board discussion. If the requesting Board member receives a second, the Superintendent will place the item on the Board agenda calendar allowing for adequate time for staff preparation on the agenda item. (15 min) Westlake Academy Item # 4– Discussion Items Page 1 of 2 WESTLAKE ACADEMY AGENDA ITEM Curriculum: PYP/MYP/DP Meeting Date: March 30, 2015 Staff Contact: Dr. Mechelle Bryson Consent Subject: Consider a Resolution Adopting the 2015-16 and 2016-17 School Calendar EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The school administration has proposed a school calendar for the 2015-16 and 2016-17 school year. The calendar meets all the requirements of the TEA for 180 instructional days less the allotted number of staff in-service days, and early release days. The Academy reviewed surrounding school districts calendars and consulted with the faculty for input when drafting this calendar. Once passed by the School Board the calendar will be submitted to TEA for final approval. Resolution 2. 2015-16 and 2016-17 Academic School Calendars Page 2 of 2 Page 1 of 1 WESTLAKE ACADEMY AGENDA ITEM Curriculum: MYP/DP Meeting Date: April 3, 2015 Staff Contact: Mechelle Bryson Workshop: Discussion/ Board Consent Item Executive Principal Subject: Approval of Native Spanish Speaker Credit by Examination EXECUTIVE SUMMARY According to Texas Education Code 74.24, “a school district must have the approval of the school district board of trustees to develop its own tests or to purchase examinations that thoroughly test the essential knowledge and skills in the applicable grade level or subject area.” The academy is seeking approval to create a credit by exam to award credit to native speakers for Spanish I and Spanish II. The goal of a credit by exam for native speakers is to meet the unique needs of our native speakers and for proper academic placement. The test is designed to measure a native speakers proficiency in the following areas: listening, reading, writing and speaking. Discuss and review the draft DirectionFinders Parent Survey Questions for 2015. Assistant to the Superintendent DeGan provided an overview of the proposed survey questions. Discussion ensued regarding the ability to access the survey using a mobile device, previous survey themes or issues, and recommendations to include questions regarding Math and Spanish. b. Present and review the draft of Tier Two (Departmental) Strategy Map for Westlake Academy. Assistant to the Superintendent DeGan provided an overview of the Strategy Map. Objective Owners: Mr. Alan Burt, Mr. Chris Hill, Mrs. Busico-Flight, Dr. Barton, Ms. Furnish, Ms. Bunch, Mrs. Cawthra, Mr. Harding, Director Piper and Dr. Myers, Ms. Alison Schneider and Dr. Bryson provided an overview of their respective objectives on the Tier Two Map. Discussion ensued regarding employee surveys, possible student survey, Gallery Night funding, grant funding, not tailoring programs to the dollars, and identifying sustainable needs. c. Westlake Academy’s College Graduation Results. Dr. Bryson provided a presentation and overview of the results using the National Student Clearinghouse Data. Discussion ensued regarding State and United States graduation rates, immigrants graduating from colleges in the United States, the number of years necessary to complete certain degree plans, additional data that can be correlated using this data, systems in place to stay in-touch with our graduates, communicating this data with students and parents. 6. WHEREAS, the Westlake Academy Board of Trustees has considered the proposed 2015-16 and 2016-17 school calendar, including three annual professional development days in lieu of instruction; and WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees finds that the passage of this Resolution is in the best interests of the Academy and the public; WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees finds that the passage of this Resolution is in the best interest of the citizens of Westlake as well as the students, their parents, and faculty of Westlake Academy. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF WESTLAKE ACADEMY: SECTION 1: That the Board of Trustees of Westlake Academy hereby adopts the proposed 2015-16 and 2016-17 School Calendar (Exhibit ‘A’) and authorizes the school administration to request the State Waiver. SECTION 2: That this Reso lution shall become effective upon the date of its passage, but contingent upon approval by the TEA. SECTION 3: If any portion of this resolution shall, for any reason, be declared invalid by any court of competent jurisdiction, such invalidity shall not affect the remaining provisions hereof and the Council hereby determines that it would have adopted this Resolution without the invalid provision. 2017 Westlake Academy Resolution 15-05 Page 1 of 2 WESTLAKE ACADEMY RESOLUTION 15-05 A RESOLUTION OF THE WESTLAKE ACADEMY BOARD OF TRUSTEES APPROVING AND ADOPTING A CREDIT BY EXAM (CBE). WHEREAS, the Texas Education Code 74.24 mandates that the Board of Trustees approve locally developed Credit by Exams (CBEs); and, WHEREAS, Westlake Academy has researched, discussed and written a Credit by Exam (CBE) to be utilized to award Spanish I and II credit to Westlake Academy Spanish native speaking students; and, WHEREAS, the Board of Trustees finds that the passage of this Resolution is in the best interest of the citizens of Westlake as well as the students, their parents, and faculty of Westlake Academy. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF WESTLAKE ACADEMY: SECTION 1: That , all matters stated in the recitals hereinabove are found to be true and correct and are incorporated herein by reference as if copied in their entirety. SECTION 2: That , the Board of Trustees Westlake Academy, hereby approves the new Credit by Exam (CBE) for Westlake Academy. SECTION 3: If any portion of this resolution shall, for any reason, be declared invalid by any court of competent jurisdiction, such invalidity shall not affect the remaining provisions hereof and the Council hereby determines that it would have adopted this Resolution without the invalid provision. The Board member making the request will contact the Superintendent with the requested item and the Superintendent will list it on the agenda. At the meeting, the requesting Board member will explain the item, the need for Board discussion of the item, the item’s relationship to the Board’s strategic priorities, and the amount of estimated staff time necessary to prepare for Board discussion. If the requesting Board member receives a second, the Superintendent will place the item on the Board agenda calendar allowing for adequate time for staff preparation on the agenda item.
