HomeMy WebLinkAboutMeeting HandoutsIn asking questions about this matter, I have repeatedly been told that I
need to get out of the 4.0 mentality. That answer confuses me for two
1. Because every website of every potential college in the country that I
have looked at lists a profile of their "average incoming freshman."
That profile indicated the average ACT /SAT scores of an accepted
student and an average GPA. That makes this very relevant to me.
2. At some point in the process, college applicants from all over the
country have to placed in a pool and compared one to another.
Whether that comparison takes place on a Percentile or GPA basis, it
DOES take place. Are we representing our students are competitively
as we could be?
Solutions:
1. Transcripts are already going out. The first deadline for many schools
is November 1. Given the short time frame, please mandate a
committee that will immediately look into this and make adjustments
as necessary.
2. If the committee finds that our students have been under-
represented, then make the adjustments. Transcripts can be
changed. No one is looking for inflated grades simply fair grades.
3. Education. Make sure that going forward EVERYONE is aware of the
college standard and the assessments are based on that information.

Following is my recommendation to calculate the GPA for 2008/2009 students in grades 9,
10, and 11, effective until their graduation. The Higher Education Coordinating Board has
postponed their vote on a uniform GPA until December, 2008, and their proposal will be
effective beginning with the 2009/2010 freshmen.
I recommend that all courses, with the exclusion of physical education courses, be included
in the GPA. Pre- ]EB and Pre-AP courses, in addition to 11B and AP courses, will be
weighted.

Academics section.
You should report your current Class Rank and GPA, even if they might
change later in the school year. If your school does not rank, select
"None" from the dropdown menu. If your school calculates both weighted
and unweighted Class Rank/GPA, report the weighted value. If your
school does not calculate a cumulative numerical GPA, or if it uses a
GPA scale that is different than the options available in the dropdown
menu, leave the Cumulative GPA field blank.

Concerns:
1. The information that has been communicated to parents, teachers,
and students at Westlake Academy indicates that a 90 (A) is a 4.0.
However, not all A's are created equal. According to the Princeton
conversion chart that most colleges use to match GPA, Percentile and
Letter Grade transcripts, "A's range from 90 to 100. However, an A
that is also a 4.0 is a 95. An "A" that is has the percentile value of 90
carries a 3.5 GPA value on the 4.0 conversion chart. Much different
than our school's interpretation
2. The Bar. When faculty, students, and parents believe "the bar" is at
90 for a 4.0 then they grade and work accordingly. Grading the
students with a bar at 90 when the college bar is at 95 is pointless.
Our aim is to prepare for college acceptance or what are we about? I
questioned a number of teachers on this issue. All I spoke with but
one, indicated that they thought a 90 —100 was a 4.0. When I
showed them the Princeton Conversion chart, they were stunned
and commented that they would have graded their students
differently had they known. They felt they had undergraded their
students. BTW the "one" simply didn't know the answer to my
question.
3. Weighted grades are those grades that are given an additional point
value for being either AP or IB. Many colleges ask for unweighted
grades and apply their own weighting system to the grade. However,
the Common Application (which is used by hundreds of schools
across the country including ALL Ivy League Schools) asks for the
weighted grade where possible. They will accept this weighted grade
in either numeric (1 -100) or GPA (4.0) format. Weight can be given
to pre-113 or pre -AP classes. Carroll and Keller ISD's give weight to
their pre -AP classes. Our transcripts, at Westlake Academy do not
indicate our 9th and 10th grade classes as pre-113 and they are not
given weighting in the cumulative grade. Consequently, a transcipt
submitted as unweighted grade does not readily provide the
information necessary for the college to weight it. Similarly, our
weighted grades are not inclusive of pre-113 courses — which vastly
under- represents our students when compared to other schools.
The purpose for this brief survey is to invite your reflections on your experiences at Westlake Academy and to contribute
to our ongoing development of the Academy. We appreciate your time and thought.
