Develop the Domains 1.Planning and preparation for learning 2.Classroom management 3.Teaching methodology 4.Monitoring, assessment, and follow-up 5.Family and community outreach 6.Professional responsibilities Rating scale and labels •Four-point scale: 4 – Highly Effective 3 – Effective 2 – Improvement Necessary 1 – Does Not Meet Standards Mini-Observations •The challenge is to: o Get into classrooms frequently; o See reality versus the dog and pony show; o Give teachers meaningful feedback o Have authentic conversations about teaching and learning; o Know enough to evaluate fairly A key question: How long do you need to stay in a classroom? •To see a representative slice of teaching and learning – 10-15 minutes •To be able to have a conversation about teaching and learning – 10-15 minutes •Diminishing returns after that Mini-observations: •15-minute mini-observations •Unannounced, random times •Trying for two weeks per cycle •Face-to-face feedback within 24 hours The essence of this system: •Being purposeful! •Observing lots of slivers of teaching that represented reality •Giving honest feedback face to face •Regular, authentic conversations with teachers •In touch with all classrooms •Lots of meaningful data for evaluations A more complete picture!
