Mini-Observations
•The challenge is to:
o Get into classrooms frequently;
o See reality versus the dog and pony show;
o Give teachers meaningful feedback
o Have authentic conversations about teaching
and learning;
o Know enough to evaluate fairly
A key question: How long do you need
to stay in a classroom?
•To see a representative slice of teaching and
learning – 10-15 minutes
•To be able to have a conversation about
teaching and learning – 10-15 minutes
•Diminishing returns after that
Mini-observations:
•15-minute mini-observations
•Unannounced, random times
•Trying for two weeks per cycle
•Face-to-face feedback within 24 hours
The essence of this system:
•Being purposeful!
•Observing lots of slivers of teaching that
represented reality
•Giving honest feedback face to face
•Regular, authentic conversations with
teachers
•In touch with all classrooms
•Lots of meaningful data for evaluations
A more complete picture!
