HomeMy WebLinkAboutStrings presentationWestlake Academy Strings Program Lisa Redding-String Teacher Jamie Schmitz-Head of Primary March, 2010 This image cannot currently be displayed. © International Baccalaureate Organization 2007 Page 2 Strings Summary 09/10 •We are implementing a modified Suzuki method, which mirrors the process by which children naturally acquire language. •The program encompasses grades 2-5. •Students may choose to specialize in the violin, viola, or cello. •Parents may choose to rent instruments if they so wish. •Each student learns in groups of between 9-12 students. •The groups are differentiated as much as possible, so that students learn alongside others at a similar developmental level. This image cannot currently be displayed. © International Baccalaureate Organization 2007 Page 3 Strings Summary 09/10 •Each group receives 20 minutes of focused instruction per week (supplemented by regular practice). This system also ensures that students do not spend any instructional time tuning instruments. Tuning is carried out by Lisa prior to each session. •Lisa held a parent seminar at the beginning of the academic year, to familiarize parents with the program and to encourage program participation. She is also constantly communicating with parents. •Students have had the opportunity to perform at various times throughout the academic year. This image cannot currently be displayed. © International Baccalaureate Organization 2007 Page 4 What’s on the Horizon for 10/11? •More built-in planning and preparation time for the Strings Teacher (Lisa Redding) •Introductory hands-on Parent/Student sessions for new and upcoming (from grade 1) families, offered up to 4 weeks prior to the beginning of the 10/11 school year •Even more opportunities for performances and community sharing.
