WESTLAKE ACADEMY
SCHOOL BOARD MEETING
February 9, 2004

Item #1: President Bradley called the meeting to order at 6:32 p.m. by announcing a quorum of all
Board members.
Item #2: The Board convened into executive session at 6:35 p.m. as President Bradley read the items to
be discussed. The Board reconvened into open session at 7:02 p.m.
Item #3: No action was needed coming out of executive session.
Item #4: Citizens' Presentation. Mr. Todd White of 404 Mineral Springs in Keller asked to address the
Board regarding an item that was on the agenda. The President explained to Mr. White that he could
speak under this item, or, if he preferred, he could speak when the agenda item is called. Mr. White
chose to speak later. No one else chose to address the Board.
Item #5: Consider a Resolution adopting a school calendar and a longer school day for the 2004-05
academic year. Ms. Brizuela explained the calendar to the Board and reported that staff was
recommending that the school day be extended by 45 minutes -- 15 in the morning and 30 in the
afternoon -- thereby making the school day end at 4:00 p.m. There was a motion by Mr. Sparrow,
seconded by Mr. Brown, to adopt Resolution No. 04-03. There was no discussion and at this time
President Bradley asked if anyone in the audience would like to address the Board. The following
people addressed the Board, all expressing conformity with the dates on the proposed school calendar
but suggesting a variety of variations for the allocation of the additional 45 minutes to the school day:
Terri Smith of 1502 Plantation Drive in Southlake, Ann Dunlap of 800 Victoria in Southlake, Janet
Noonan of 814 Shore Crest Drive in Southlake, Debra Ledak of 1220 Mt. Gilead in Keller, Kim Evans
of 1813 Broken Bend Drive in Westlake, Todd White of 404 Mineral Spring in Keller, Pamela Spence
of 32 Fairgreen Drive in Trophy Club and Jackie Stephens of 336 Inverness Drive in Trophy Club.
There was a short discussion after which Mr. Sparrow amended his motion to delete the section relating
to a longer school day. Mr. Brown, who seconded the motion, agreed to the amendment of the motion.
After discussion, the Board asked Ms. Brizuela to gather more information on the parents' preference
regarding the starting and ending times for the school day and to bring a recommendation back to the
Board. Melissa Sircar of 804 Timberlake in Southlake, Chair of the House of Commons, volunteered the

help of the House of Commons in surveying the parents. There was no further discussion and the motion
carried unanimously.
Item #6: Consider a Resolution authorizing the Westlake Academy to present a waiver for special
considerations. Mr. Petty and Ms. Brizuela explained this item to the Board. There was a motion by Mr.
Frey, seconded by Mr. Redding, to adopt Resolution No. 04-04. There was no discussion and the motion
carried unanimously.
Item #7: Review and approve minutes of the regular meeting held on January 12, 2004. There was a
motion by Mr. Sparrow, seconded by Mr. Brown, to accept the minutes as presented. There was no
discussion and the motion carried unanimously.
Item 48: There was a motion by Mr. Brown, seconded by Mr. Held, to adjourn. The motion carried
unanimously and the meeting was adjourned at 7:30 p.m.
